Matthews – Growth that is Built on Success

New waste incineration plants fuel ongoing expansion

While so many UK companies seem content to sit tight and lie low until the final conclusion of Brexit is announced, Matthews Environmental Solutions, based in the Tameside area of Greater Manchester, is steadily building on continued success with significant new contracts, a busy work-in-progress schedule and a packed pipeline of prospective new orders that mean the company has now accelerated existing expansion activities.

One of the latest orders to be announced by Matthews is a significant contract for an advanced waste incineration plant that has come from a major government organisation currently working on animal and plant health science at a dedicated site of national importance.

Because no waste is permitted to be processed off-site, it is absolutely crucial that the proposed waste incineration plant is fully capable and ultra reliable to ensure that there is no risk of a breakdown or stoppage. Any disruption to the waste incineration process would have far-reaching consequences and would greatly impact on the organisation’s capacity to support animal and plant health across England and Wales.

This significant contract is for a specially designed and engineered 500kg/hr rotary kiln incinerator. It will incorporate a carcass hoist, bin lift, hydraulic loading box, bin weigher, data logging system and waste loading system enclosure.

Other important design considerations include the wide variation of waste to be treated, plus the fact that the waste incineration system itself is required to be operational 24/7. Consequently, it also incorporates a secondary combustion chamber and De-NOx chamber, together with an advanced flue gas treatment system that is fully compliant with the latest EU Waste Incineration Directive (WID) 2000/76/EC which forms an integral part of the EU Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) 2010/75/EC. In order to ensure complete compliance, the system also incorporates a comprehensive continuous emissions monitoring system.

As an additional environmentally conscious feature, the waste incineration plant includes an innovative steam recovery system that enables steam generated by the incineration process to be recycled and used for other on-site processes.

As well as designing and manufacturing this high-specification plant, Matthews will also be responsible for full project management, installation, commissioning, performance testing and operational support. The project is being completed alongside our local partner company, Haden Freeman.

On a broader scale and looking ahead, this ongoing success will not only be of benefit for Matthews Environmental Solutions, as it also allows us to continue to invest in the prosperity of the borough. Increased business on this scale means we have now outgrown our existing facility and we are currently searching for new, larger premises (still within the Tameside area). We are also in the process of recruiting new staff, including engineering, design and administration personnel, and perhaps most importantly more apprentices, allowing us to develop and nurture new talent thus improving the sustainability of our business. This increase in business also means that we will be extending our local supply chain with additional requirements from local suppliers, sub-contractors and partner companies.

Yes, it is growth built on success for us … but our success equals growth for our local community.
